For students ages 5 through 12 experiencing emotional or behavioral disorders, High Point Elementary School provides a comprehensive educational and therapeutic program. Every staff member treats each child with respect and dignity, recognizing the individuality of every student we serve. Teachers, parents and members of the student's sending child study team work together to establish an Individual Education Plan (IEP) for each student. Academic content is based on the New Jersey Core Curriculum Standards and focuses on reading, mathematics and language arts. Social studies and science are taught also, and a variety of enrichment classes fill out the schedule and include:
The primary focus in the classroom is the teaching of Reading, Mathematics and Language Arts, which are taught in small groups. If a student has a specific learning need, the classroom teacher selects a program designed to meet that need. Otherwise, conventional materials typical of those found in local schools are used for instruction. Science and Social Studies are also introduced, and an annual Science Fair is held. An Enrichment Program which fosters higher-level thinking skills as well as creative thinking is scheduled weekly for all classes. Art instruction, with emphasis on developing fine motor skills and an understanding of artistic methods is also offered weekly. Physical Education, including swimming at the local YMCA and gymnastics, is offered three times weekly. Music instruction and Health instruction are conducted in the classroom setting while, computer skills are taught in small groups. The classroom is designed to provide an atmosphere conducive to the academic, social and emotional growth of the students. Behavior modification systems are an integral part of the classroom management, and social interactional skills are emphasized. HPES Admissions Local school districts will refer students to High Point Elementary School under N.J.A.C. 6A:14 Special Education. High Point Elementary School is approved to provide behaviorally and multiply disabled classroom programs for students who are eligible for special education services. HPES Staff High Point Elementary School uses a cross-disciplinary approach, integrating the skills and training of an interdisciplinary team of professionals. The school's staff believe that improving the behavioral and social skills of our students is as important as increasing their academic learning. Educational staff members include Special Education Teachers, a Gifted and Talented Teacher, a Physical Education Teacher, an Art Teacher, a Music Teacher, a Computer Technology Teacher, and a Health Teacher. The High Point educational team is complemented by related-services staff including Speech and Language Clinicians, Clinical School Social Workers, School Nurses, Psychiatrists and Occupational Therapy Consultants and staff specializing in substance abuse and sexual abuse.
