Programs at our adolescent school are designed for students ages 12 to 21 whose emotional, behavioral, communication and learning problems prevent them from participating in traditional programs. An Individual Education Plan (IEP) is written for each student, and educational courses are based on the New Jersey Core Curriculum Standards.

Students enjoy a rich and varied adolescent school experience that prepares them for a productive adult life. The school offers students the benefits of a self-contained classroom as well as the opportunity to participate in a wide range of prevocational and enrichment programs:

  • Computer Training
  • Jobs/Production and Assembly
  • Vehicle Maintenance
  • Home Economics
  • Photography and Darkroom
  • Carpentry
  • Food Service
  • Horticulture
  • And more!
Students are assigned to classrooms based on their social and academic ability levels. A Teacher of the Handicapped and Teaching Assistants are in each classroom. A 1:3 staffing ratio is provided throughout the school. Educational programs are developed for each student and implemented individually and in classroom groups. Students participate in a wide variety of on-campus and off-campus experiences that teach appropriate social and behavioral skills. Students are scheduled for these activities based on their ability levels and interest in these areas.

Additionally, a wide variety of prevocational programs are available to students of all abilities. Students first participate in classroom projects (profit sharing), then progress to school jobs (program payroll) and graduate to shared-time vocational training, if appropriate.

This school offers many Special Services:

Therapeutic Services

While other schools may offer comprehensive educational programming, what makes High Point stand out among our peers is our extensive clinical program. Our clinical program focuses on the emotional, social and developmental needs of the student population and their families. Our goal is to provide comprehensive services designed to meet the challenge of each student's unique abilities and needs.

At High Point, we are proud of the fact that we have child psychiatrists on staff, as well as licensed clinical social workers. From individual therapy to group and family therapy, we strive to connect to our students and meet their developmental, social and emotional needs. Additional services include substance abuse evaluation/treatment, sexual abuse consultation/evaluation, onsite emergency clinical/crisis services and more.

High Point Schools also provide speech, language and hearing services to help bring about optimal communication skills in all students. For those students requiring this therapy, services are provided both individually and in small conversation groups.

Speech, Language and Hearing Services

The goal of the Speech and Language Program is to facilitate optimal communication skills for all High Point students. Students' speech, language and hearing abilities are formally screened upon admission to the program. Students are then assessed at the beginning of each school year. Results of these screenings, observations across programs, and team consultations are utilized to determine the need for, frequency and type of therapy. Conferences with parents/guardians also play an important part in developing students' goals.

Therapy is conducted both individually and in small conversation groups. Speech and language services are also provided in classroom groups and in cross-disciplinary collaborative projects. Several classrooms are equipped with FM Systems which amplify the teacher's voice throughout the room, providing a clear and consistent speech signal. The Speech and Language Clinicians consult with classroom teachers regarding the use of these classroom FM systems, personal FM systems and hearing aid use/care.

Behavior Management

Pro-social behavior is taught through a variety of methods, including role modeling, peer group support, time out, and individual and group problem solving discussions. Privileges and independence are earned when a student demonstrates greater responsibility through structured classroom behavior management systems.

HPAS Staff

High Point Adolescent School uses a cross-disciplinary approach, integrating the skills and training of an interdisciplinary team of professionals. The school's staff believe that improving the behavioral and social skills of students is as important as increasing their academic skills.

Educational staff members include Special Education teachers and teachers in Health and Physical Education, Computers, PreVocational Training, Art, Building Trades, World Languages, Music, and Home Economics. The High Point educational team is complemented by related-services staff including Speech and Language Clinicians, School Clinical Social Workers, Psychiatrists, School Nurses and Occupational Therapy Consultants and staff specializing in substance and sexual abuse.
