Diagnosis and Effective Treatments for PTSD in Adults and Adolescents

In this lecture Dr. Foa will begin by discussing prevalence and diagnosis of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) in adults and children and the effects of PTSD on people's functioning and quality of life. She will then present emotional processing theory to explain why some trauma survivors develop PTSD while others recover. Next, Dr. Foa will discuss the empirical support for the efficacy of Prolonged Exposure for adults and adolescents. Indeed, Prolonged Exposure received the most evidence for its efficacy in ameliorating PTSD and related symptoms. Lastly, she will consider the safety and acceptability of Prolonged Exposure and present data demonstrating that this treatment can be readily disseminated to community clinics that do not specialize in PTSD.

Six clinical CEUs are pending approval from the NASW-NJ. REGISTER ONLINE.
